The Rules of ChessWithPass™
ChessWithPass™ preserves all the fundamental rules of classical chess and introduces one key addition.
1. The Foundation
The game is played on a standard 8×8 chessboard using the classical set of pieces. All rules governing piece movement, captures, castling, pawn promotion, and the end of the game remain unchanged.
2. The Right to Pass
Each player has the right to skip one move per game.
A pass means that the player:
- makes no move
- does not move any piece
- gives the turn to the opponent
After a pass, the game continues as usual.
3. Restrictions on the Pass
A pass may not be used:
- If the player's king is in check
- If the pass would violate the fundamental rules of chess
- In response to an opponent's pass (pass after pass is not allowed)
A player must respond to check with a legal move.
If the opponent has used a pass, the player must make a move.
A pass cannot be answered with a pass.
This is not a restriction for its own sake. It is a matter of meaning. A pass transfers initiative. If a pass is answered with another pass, nothing changes. And if nothing changes, the pass loses its meaning.
4. Recording the Pass
A pass is considered made at the moment the player declares it (either verbally or in notation).
Once used, the right to pass is considered exhausted and cannot be used again.
5. Impact on the Game
A pass:
- does not change the position of the pieces
- does not affect castling rights
- does not alter previous moves
However, it changes the turn order and the dynamics of the game.
6. End of the Game
The conditions for ending the game remain standard:
- checkmate
- stalemate
- agreement between the players
- the fifty-move rule
- threefold repetition
A pass counts as a turn in the sequence of play but does not change the position.
7. Strategic Significance
The Pass is part of strategy and may be used to:
- preserve a position
- create pressure
- alter the tempo of the game
- disrupt the opponent's plans
ChessWithPass™ does not change chess. It adds one dimension. And it is this dimension that makes the game deeper.
